Safe Haven Offers Safety Tips for Kids Going Back to School

Summer is winding down and the kids are finally back in school. For many parents, the thought of sending your children off to school for the first time can be scary. Now that the chaos of buying school supplies, arranging carpools and meeting the teachers has ended, take this time to go over safety tips with your children to ensure they are protected throughout the year, even when you aren’t there to keep them safe.

Contact Information
While schools keep your information on file, it’s important for your child to know the basic contact information to reach you in case of an emergency. Your phone number, address, emergency numbers like 911 should all be practiced and memorized.

Safe Word
Children can be very trusting, and strangers can take advantage of that. Establish a safe word with your child. If your child is being picked up from school by a friend or co-worker at the last minute, that person can tell your child the safe word so your kid will know it’s safe. Make sure your child knows to never leave with anyone, no matter how friendly they look, unless they know the safe word.

Backpack Safety
To ensure your child’s safety from heavy books, make sure to pick out a two-strap backpack. Wearing two straps instead of one distributes the weight more evenly. The backpack should be less than 10 to 15 percent of the child’s body weight.

Home Alone after School
If your children have some time alone at home after school and before you get home from work, make sure they know safety rules around the house. It’s always a good idea to go over the basics, such as emergency numbers, locking the doors, shutting the garage door and staying away from the stove until you get home. For additional relief, install a home security system and you can check on your kids from work with live video feeds through the ADT Pulse App. You can even check the locks and the garage door and lock them remotely!
