Whether you’re preparing your home for sale or just looking to make a few upgrades, remodeling is a rite of passage for most homeowners. When deciding to remodel your home, you may debate implementing large scale changes over your entire home, doing one room at a time, or making small changes across the entire home. Whatever you decide, there are several simple tips to consider when remodeling your home to increase its overall security.
Home Automation
The process of remodeling a home is the perfect time to install new wiring or smart devices. Since you’ll most likely need to patch walls, you can take the time to properly embed devices such as smart thermostats, speakers or any other electronic device. If you happen to already have some sort of interior cameras or home automation, you can easily keep an eye on any and all work being done at your home while you are at work or running to the store.
Doors and Locks
Perhaps one of the easiest and most effective ways to increase your homes security is to change out, not only the locks of your home, but the doors themselves. While it’s important to make sure you have a deadbolt lock on any exterior door, that’s not always enough to deter thieves. Modern door construction can utilize a number of materials, including wood, glass or even metal. Did you know that some materials are more secure and sturdier than others? Obviously, while glass can be tempered to be quite strong, it does invite potential intruders to do a little window shopping in your home. Wood, on the other hand, can be incredibly sturdy as they are often solid pieces and can prevent wandering eyes.
Home Security System
If you don’t already have a security system, this is an easy way to improve your home and add extra value. With a few devices such as smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and door sensors, you can add a substantial amount security to any home. For added protection, most companies will provide a video option that can integrate external and internal cameras into any home. You can read more about some of the options we provide online.
